Vitarana buddhi

One day Avantii-raaja came to know the greatness of Vikramaaditya Maharaja. The Raaja got Iirsha. He used to always think how he can get more Keerti, Yashas than Vikramaaditya.

One day a Sanyaasi came to Avantii-raaja. The King told his vichaaram to the Sanyaasi. Sanyaasi said “There is a Kaalikaalayam near Himavannagaram. Some Yoga-purushas everyday do Yagnyas there. Go there. After snaanam, enter the Aalayam, build a Gundam and do a Homam for Kaalikaa Devi. In the end give your shariiram as Puurnaahuti. Yoga-purushas will save you, Kaalikaa Devi will appear and give Her Anugraham”. Avantii-raaja did as told by the Sanyaasi and asked Kaalikaa Devi “Everyday I must get 7 Crores”. Kaalikaa Devi said “if everyday you give your shariiram as Puurnaahuti, you will get what you want”.

Everyday the King did as said by Kaalikaa Devi and did Daanam of the Dhanam he got, to whoever asked and soon got the name that he is a great Daata. Vikramaaditya Maharaja came to know about the Daana-gunam of Avantii-raaja. He immediately went ot Himavannagaram and was about to give his shariiram as Puurnaahuti. Just then Kaalikaa Devi appeared and Vikramaaditya said

without even Avantii-raaja having to do the difficult task of Puurnaahuti, give him the dhanam so that he can do more and more Daanams“. Very happy with the Amruta-vaakyas of Vikramaaditya Maharaja, Kaalikaa Devi said “Raaja! No one ever will be born who equals you in Vitarana (Tyaagam, Audaaryam)”.

On knowing about Vikramaditya, Avantii-raja got Iirsha, whereas Vikramaditya on knowing about Avantii-raja, helped him by asking Kaalikaa Devi Varam to bless Avantii-raja!

During Magadha Raaja’s Paalana, a Shveta-gajam was born. It had sakala-shubha-lakshanams. It had Divya-shaktis too. Hence the Raaja made it his Mangalahasti. During the Nagara-utsavams, once, the King did Pura-pradakshinam on it. The praja, seeing the Mangalahasti, said “aaha! What a hasti! What aakaaram! What Manda-gamanam! What Vilaasam! This Divya hasti instead of being with an ordinary Raaja, must be with the Chakravarti”.

Listening to this, the King got Iirsha on the Mangalahasti! Aaha! How many forms Iirsha, Asuuya has! The King had Iirsha even on an animal. Magadha Raaja thought “I will not let this Hasti go to Chakravarti”.

He called the Maavati who trained the Mangalahasti and asked “what all Shikshana did you give to this Hasti”? “All kinds, Prabhu!” replied the Maavati. “Ok! Can you make it climb the Parvata-shikharam?”, asked the Raaja. “Yes!” replied the Maavati. Magadha raaja, who thought that Mangalahasti will slip and fall down, had Aashaa-bhangam. Mangalahasti, the Raaja, Maavati reached the Parvata-shikharam. “Make it stand on three legs” said the Raaja. Maavati made it do the same. Similarly the King asked for 2 legs, then one leg. Mangalahasti stood on 1 leg, without falling. Maavati said “There is no Gajam that equals this in this Desham Maharaja!”. “Ok! Now make it fly” said the Raaja. Maavati by then clearly understood the Matsaram of Magadha Raaja. He made out that the King wants to harm the Mangalahasti.

He sat on the Mangalahasti, asked it to fly and while the Gajam was on air, the Gajaachaarya said like this to the King “Raaja! A Manda-buddhi, Dur-buddhi like you doesnt deserve this Apuurva-hasti. You dont know what is Guna-gauravam. We are now going to Vaaranaasi, to see the Kaashi Chakravarti”. The Gajam flew and stood before the Chakravarti. The Gnyaani, Chakravarti, gave a lot of respect to the Maavati and Mangalhasti, welcomed them and gave Mangalahasti a new Gaja-shaala to stay in.

Morals in the Story:

  1. Guna-gauravam is important. One must always give respect to the Uttamas. If one doesnt know how to respect, the Uttamas will leave him. Mangalahasti left the Magadha Raaja, who was burning with Matsaram.
  2. Iirsha, Asuuya and Matsaram cause downfall of the people who have them, howmuch ever great they are otherwise. This is well shown in the story.

The story of Ghuśma

There used to be a sampanna-graamam near Devagiri in Southern Bhaarata-desham. A Braahmana by name Sudharma used to live there. His patni’s name was Sudeha. Sudeha was sad because they didnt have any santaanam. She then arranged Kalyaanam of her sister, Ghushma and Sudharma, hoping to get santaanam. Ghushma was a great Shiva-bhakta. She used to do archana of 101 Paarthiva-lingams (Shiva-Lingam made of sand) everyday.

On a sumuhuurtam, Ghushma gave birth to a boy. Everyone was happy. But the happiness didnt last for long. Many used to give more respect to Ghushma than Sudeha and used to say Sudeha was a Vandhya (woman with no children). Slowly Iirsha and Asuuya started in Sudeha on Ghushma.

Meanwhile the kid grew up and Sudharma did his Kalyaanam. The putra (son) and snusha (daughter-in-law) always used to respect Sudeha and look after her with prema. Similarly Sudeha and Ghushma also loved her. However because of Iirsha and asuuya, Sudeha’s heart was burning.

Finally Iirsha turned into Matsaram and one night she went near the newly married couple and killed the putra when they were sleeping. She then cut him into pieces and put the body into a kuupam where Ghushma used to put Nirmaalyam and used Paarthiva-Lingams! She came back and slept peacefully as if nothing happened.

Next day morning Sudharma and Ghushma were inolved in their Dina-charya and Sudeha was in kitchen acting as if nothing happened. But the snusha, to her terror, found that her husband was missing and she saw blood and flesh pieces. She tried to tell Sudharma and Ghushma, but they didnt respond as their were completely immersed in Daiva-dhyaanam.

When Ghushma was returning after putting that day’s Paarthiva-Lingams in the kuupam, she saw her putra walk towards her! At the same time Parama Shiva gave His divya-darshanam to Ghushma and told her to ask for a Varam. Ghushma said “please appear here as a Jyotirlingam and bless all of us”. Immediately Parama Shiva took the form as “Ghushmeshvara Jyotirlingam” (one of the 12 Jyotirlingams). The Kuupam became a Pushkarini by name “Shivaalayam”.

Morals in the story:

  1. Iirsha, asuuya and Matsaram are very terrible. They change even a woman, with Komala Hrudayam into a Kathinaatma. Sudeha, who herself did Kalyaanam of Ghushma and Sudharma, developed Iirsha and finally did Mahaa-paapa kaaryams.
  2. Bhakti of Ghushma and Sudharma are well shown in the story. Nothing disturbed them, they had 100% belief in God. God always protects such Bhaktas.

Ghosha Yaatra

One who tries to spoil others will himself get spoilt. This was very true in case of Duryodhana. Right from childhood Duryodhana, Dusshaasana, Karna and Shakuni (Dushtachatushtayam) tried to harm the Paandavas in many many ways. This episode happened during the Vanavaasam of the Paandavas.

Once Duryodhana, who didnt want to let Paandavas live peacefully even in their vanavaasam, asked his guudhachaari to inform himself about the whereabouts, dina-charya etc. of the Paandavas. The guudhachaaris performed their duty and reported like this:

“Arya! According to your aagnya we searched all forests. We enquired all the things you asked for. Dharmaraaja is doing many Yaagas, Vratas. Currently he is doing a Divya Yaagam by name ‘Sadyaskadam’, with the help of Munis”. Listening to this news Duryodhana got Mati-bhramanam. He thought if we let these Paandavas continue to do such Yaagas, Vratas and get many siddhis then it will be still more difficult to kill them. He wanted to destroy the Yaagam somehow. Since it was already late, all of them started to the forests immediately. Duryodhana told the Kuru-kula-vruddhas like Bheeshmaacharya, Dronaachaarya that they were going for Ghosha-Yaatra (and told nothing about disturbing the Paandavas). In Ghosha-Yaatra, the King goes to see the Yoga-kshemam of the Gomaatas in his Raajyam. They telling that it is Ghosha-Yaatra, instead of going to Go-shaalas, reached the forests and tried to camp near the place where Paandavas were doing the Yaagam.

Duryodhana ordered to put tents around the Sarovaram (that was near by). Immediately Gandharva-veeras appeared and said like this “O muurkha-maanavas! This area in currently under the control of the Gandharva-Raaja Chitrasena (Chitrasena was the Gandharva who taught Arjuna Naatyam, when he went to Indra-lokam). No one must(can) enter this. Please go away. Else we will kill you”. The ahankaari, Duryodhana, didnt like these words. He ordered his sainyam to occupy by force. Immediately many many Gandharva-veeras came there and a big Yuddham started between Gandharvas and Duryodhana, Dushshaasana, Karna aadi Kaurava-veeras. In no time Chitrasena defeated the Kaurava sena. Kaurava Naayakas like Duryodhana, Dushshaasana and Karna were lying unconscious. Kaurava Raanis, with Bhayam, ordered the sainikas to go and request Paandavas, the Dharma-vartis, for help. Listening to the aartanaadam of the Kaurava-sainikas, one of the first to respond was Draupadi.

Draupadi said “I think helping our bandhu-janam in their kashta-kaalam is good”. Yudhishthira, the Dharma-nandana, immediately asked his brothers to go and help the Kauravas. Yudhishthira-anujas replied “Priya Bhraata! we will immediately go and save Kauravas from Gandharvas and come back”. They did Namaskaaram to Yudhishthira and went to Chitrasena.

In no time Bhiima-arjuna defeated the Gandharvas, Chitrasena and released the Kauravas. Seeing the super-human Bala-paraakramas of Arjuna, Chitrasena praised Arjuna and requested them to grant him the Darshanam of Yudhishthira, the Dharma-muurti. With aanandam, Bhiima-arjuna took Chitrasena along with Kauravas to Dharmaraaja. Seeing Yudhishthira, Chitrasena did pranaamam and said

“O Dharmanandana! Knowing that Duryodhana aadi Kauravas planned to do apakaaram to you, Devendra sent me here to stop them. However, with a Vishaala-hrudayam, you sent your brothers to save these paapaatmas”.

Even after knowing the kutila-buddhi of Duryodhana, Dharmaraaja didnt show any disrespect to him. He freed him from the bandhas, did hita-bodha and sent them away. Taking along with him Karna, Dushshaasana and other Kauravas, who bent their heads down with shy, Duryodhana left for Hastinaapuram.

Morals in the story:

  1. People who try to do bad to others will face difficulties themselves. Duryodhana, who was burning with Asuuya, Iirsha tried to harm the Paandavas; instead he got ghora-apamaanam.
  2. The Kshama gunam of Dharmaraaja is well shown in the story. Uttama purushas do Upakaaram even to an Apakaari.
  3. The Dharmya-vartanam of Draupadi and Paandavas is once again shown in this story. They immediately helped the Kauravas, who were in trouble, though always Kauravas tried to destroy them. Draupadi devi deserves a very special mention because, she helped the Kauravas even though they did the great insult of her in the way of her Vastraapakarshana.
  4. Knowing that elders like Bhishma, Drona will say “no” if they know the truth that Kauravas are going to disturb the Paandavas, the Kauravas told that they were going for Ghosha-Yaatra. Telling lies is a very bad thing.

Shri Gautama maharshi -2

(continuation of this story)

Thus many benifited from the Tapas-shakti of Shri Gautama maharshi. Many great munis used to live under his aashrayam. He with the help of his wife and shishyas used to grow vegetables, rice etc., then cook and serve to all the aashritas. Thus everyday Gautami maharshi, Ahalya and his shishyas used to get the entire phalam of Annadaanam. Thus they used to live happily following their nitya-naimittika-aadi Karma.

Maanava buddhi is chitraatichitram. When something is not there one feels its need and longs for it. Whereas once he gets it steadily, he completely forgets its importance and leaves Krutagnyata. Instead Krutaghnata starts. Iirsha, asuuya started in the muni-patnis first and then in munis staying with Shri Gautama maharshi. Everything which Gautama maharshi and Ahalya do, used to make the munis feel Gautama-Ahalya have ahankaaram that they got the Akshaya-jalam for them. This was because of the Asuuya they developed on Gautama-Ahalya, without having any Krutagnyata.

Once the munis and muni-patnis decided that somehow they must drive away Gautama-Ahalya from their place. They thought of doing apakaaram to the great Upakaari who saved them from Praanaapaaya-kshaamam. They used their Mantra-shakti and did puuja of Ganapati. Ganapati gave His divya-darshanam and asked the munis for a varam. They asked Ganapati to somehow make Gautama-Ahalya go away.

Devatas are aadhinas to Their Mantras. Many things which cannot be done otherwise can be done through Mantras. What the munis did was kaamyopaasana (they used their Mantras for satisfying their wants). Since Bhakti had no sthaanam in it, the munis were entirely responsible for their varam. For such upaasana their will be no Aadhyaatmika gains. The Tapas of Bhasmaasura and others were of similar nature (Svaartham is the only reason).

Vighneshvara was surprised by the Krutaghnata of the munis. He told munis “you thought of doing apakaaram to that person due to whom you are existing. Uttamas do Upakaaram to apakaaris. What should I say about you people who do apakaaram to a Upakaari? This will never cause Kshemam to you (so dont ask for it)”. Munis didnt like the hita-vaakyas of Mahaganapati. They still insisted on it. Ganapati said “ok. Praarabdham can never be changed. But you can never ever escape the phalitam of this Krutaghnata. Even though Gautama-Ahalya leave this place, because of them this Prapancham will only gain” and gave them the varam.

Ganapati did Shrushti of a maaya-dhenu. It started spoiling the crops (which Gautama-Ahalya were growing for Annadaanam). Knowing that a Gomaata must never even be driven away harshly, he took darbhas and put on the Gomaata. To his great surprise the maaya-dhenu died there only. Seeing this the muni-patnis and the munis did Haahaakaaras. They said “we thought that Gautama maharshi is an Uttama, but he did Go-hatya!”.

Gautama maharshi became a Vihvala. He called Ahalya and said “what is this Vidhi-vaipariityam? Did Paramashiva get angry on me? What must be done now? With Darbhas a Gomaata getting killed is unbelievable — and Go-hatya-mahaapaatakam!”. The munis and muni-patnis continued “we must never see your face. Devatas wont come to this aashramam to recieve Havis if such patitas stay here. You must immediately go away from here”. They started throwing stones on Gautama-Ahalya.

With Teevra-vedana, that he did Go-hatya-mahaapaatakam, Gautama-Ahlaya left the place and returned after going for some distance (1 krosha) to ask the munis for Praayashchittam.

This is Saampradaayam. One must immediately go to elders and ask for a way of Praayashchittam if one knows he committed a paapam. Munis replied “Gautama! You can either do (and try saving yourself from Go-hatya-paatakam):

1. 3 times Bhu-pradakshinam and do a maasa-vratam here.
2. Do 101 times Giri-pradakshina of this Brahma-giri. After that do 1 crore Linga-aaraadhana. Then Ganga-snaanam.”

Gautama maharshi did Brhama-giri Pradakshina and then Paarthiva-Linga-aaraadhana. Paarvatii-Parameshvara became prasanna seeing the puuja of Gautama-Ahalya and gave them Their Divya-darshanam, along with Pramadha-gana. Gautama maharshi did stotram of Shiva and then asked Him to save himself from Go-hatya-mahaapaatakam. Maheshvara said

“Gautama! My boy! You are a Krutaartha. You are a Dhanya. There is no paapam for you. You are an aajamna-shuddha. You were cheated by the kutantram of these Braahmanas who were bitten by asuuya. If anyone even does your naamasmaranam or has your Darshanam will loose all his paapams.

There is no praayashchittam for these krutaghnas (see this too). From today they will be Bhrashtas. They will be away from Me, leave Veda-Dharmas and their entire santaanam will become patitas. You please ask Me a varam”.

Gautama maharshi with great Vinayam and aanandam replied “Saamba-Mahaadeva! I think these Braahmanas did Upakaaram to me. Because of them only today I had the adrushtam of Your Darshanam”. Aadi-deva became happy seeing the Kshamaa-gunam of Gautama maharshi. Gautama maharshi continued “Parameshvara! If You are really impressed with me, please give Ganga for Loka-kalyaanam”. Ganga-devi appeared as soon as Parama Shiva did Sankalpam. Seeing Ganaga-maata Gautama maharshi said

“Ammaa! You are the one who makes the Trijagas pavitras. Once you blessed Bhagiiratha and saved the Sagara-kumaaras. Entire Uttara-Bhaaratam became sasya-shyaamalam because of You. Please bless the Dakshina-Bhaaratam too.”

Taking Shiva-aagnya Gangadevi took Jala-ruupam and said like this to Parama Shiva “I will go make Gautama and his parivaaram puniitam and return soon to Your Lotus feet”. Shankara said “Gangaa! You stay till the end of Kaliyugam in the 28th Mahaayugam (present Mahaayugam) of Vyvasvata-manvantaram (see this too). Then You return to Your nija-dhaamam”. Gangadevi agreed and requested Parama Shiva “Svaami! Please stay on My nadii-tiiram and bless Us”.

Shankara then became a Jyotirlingam at Tryambakeshvara. Ganga then became paravasha and started flowing from a tree (Medi chettu) on Brahma-giri. This pavitra sthaanam became Gangaa-dvaaram and Ganga got the name Gautamii because Gautama maharshi brought Her. It also got the name Godaavarii because it flowed on the place where a maayaa-gomaata fell. Many great rushis like Vasishtha and Bharadvaaja, with thier Tapobalam, did vistaaram of Godaavarii. There are many Shiva-Keshava kshetras on Godaavarii-nadii-tiiram.

Morals in the story:

  1. The importance of Krutagnyata, Kshama and Loka-shrayam are well shown by Gautama maharshi.
  2. Story shows what downfall can one durgunam like asuuya or Krutaghnata can bring even to great people. The muni-patnis and the munis coming under the influence of asuuya and iirsha even forgotKrutagnyata to Gautama maharshi.
  3. The importance of atithi-seva and anna-daanam is well shown by Gautama-Ahalya. They everyday used to grow vegetables, rice etc., cook and then serve them to the needy.
  4. Even though Gautama maharshi was driven away by the munis, he came back to ask them advice on what praayashchittam needs to be done. This shows how much importance one must give to aachaara-saampradaayas.

Shri Gosvaami Tulasidas

(We advice readers to read all previous morals before reading this story, which has Bhakti as the main theme.)

Near the famous Punyakshetram Prayaaga (see this too), in “Baanda” nagaram a graamam by name “Raajapuram” is there. There a Sarayuu-paariina-brahmana by name Aatmaaraam dubey used to live. Shrimati Hulasidevi was his dharmapatni. In the year 1554 V.S. (Vikramaarka Shakam), on Shraavana Shuddha-saptami, on Abhuktamuulaa Nakshatram, Shri Tulasidas was born to them

The baby had 12 months of garbha-vaasam. The baby never cried; people used to hear Shri Raama naamam from the baby instead. He had 32 teeth and looked like a 5 year old kid. Seeing these adbhuta-lakshanas, Hulasidevi feared amangalas for the kid and asked a dasi by name Chuniya to look after the baby. Then the baby was 10 days old and vidhivashah, Hulasidevi left her physical body. Chuniya brought up the child with lot of affection. However she too died when Tulasidas was around 5 years old.

Jagajjanani Shri Parvatidevi took pity on the anaatha baalaka, Shri Tulasidas, and used to feed him everyday with Her own hands. Aaha! who can surpass Shri Tulasidas in his adrushtam (adrushtam is that which cannot to seen — it is one’s previous janma-janmaantara karma). He had the adrushtam of taking aahaaram for the hands of Annapuurnadevi Herself. Shri Narahari Aananda, the priya shishya of Shri Anantaanandaji, came searching for Tulasidas. He was sent by Parameshvara. He named the baalaka “Raambola” and took him along with him to the divya Ayodhya nagaram.

On Maagha shuddha-panchami, Shukravaasaram, in 1561 V.S., Shri Narahari Aananda did Upanayana-aadi Samskaaras to Raambola. Raambola was an eka-santaagraahi and a buddhi-shaali. After Vidyaabhyaasam of Raambola, they left for “Varaaha-kshetram” and there Raambola heard Shri Raama Charitam from Shri Naraharisvami. Later they shifted to the anata-phaladaayaka Kaashi Kshetram.

In Kaashi kshetram, under Sheshasanaatanasvaami, Raambola did Veda-Vedaanga adhyayanam for 15 years. Raambola had all the Veda-Vedaantas on his jihvaagram. After taking the anugnya of his Guru, he then left for Raajapuram. He did Yathaavidhi Shraaddhakarmas to his Maata-pitas, when he came to know that they were no more. He used to sing Shri Raama Charitam and spend his time.

On Jyeshtha Shuddha-trayodashi, Guruvaasaram, in 1583 V.S., Raambola and Ratnaavali had Kalyaanam. Raambola used to like Ratnaavali very much. Once when she went to her father’s place, Raambola couldnt bear the viraham and went to her. Seeing the blind prema of Raambola she said “O Praaneshvara! If you show even half of the prema you are showing on me, you would have long time back got Moksham”. Antarmathanam started in Raambola, he immediately left that place and reached Prayaaga. After that he did many Teertha-yatras.

In Maanasasarovaram he had the darshanam of the great Raama bhakta, Kaakabhushundi. Tulasidas used to do Raamkatha-pravachanam in Kaashi Kshetram. Everyday after Sandhyaavandanam, Tulasidas used to pour the Teertham near the root of a Vruksham. A Brahmaraakshasa (the form a Braahmana who does not spread his knowledge gets), who was living on the Vruksham, got Vimukti due to the mahima of the Teertham. The Brahmaraakshasa told Tulasidas “because of your Teertha prabhaavam, I got Vimukti. Please tell me in what way I can help you?”. Tulasidas asked him in what way he can have Shri Raama divya darshanam. Brahmaraakshasa replied “I dont know that. But you take the aashrayam of Shri Aanjaneya and then you will have the darshanam of Shri Raama”. When asked by Tulasidas how to get the aashrayam of Shri Aanjaneya, the Brahmaraakshasa replied “Yetra Yetra Raghunaatha Keertanam Tatra Tatra ….”.

To listen to Shri Tulasidas’s Raama Charita Pravachanam, everyday a Vruddha Brahmana used to come. He used to come before everyone comes and leave after everyone leaves. Listening to Shri Raama gaadha, he used to have Aananda-bhaashpas. Seeing the tanmyayatvam of the Vruddha, once Shri Tulasidas asked “Svaami! Who are You?”. Shri Hanumaan showed his Divya-ruupam. Shri Tulasidas did His praarthana and asked Him how he will have Shri Raama Darshanam. Aanjaneya Svaami replied “go to Chitrakuuta-parvatam. There you will have Shri Raama Chandra Svaami’s Darshanam”. Shri Tulasidas immediately went to Chitrakuutam and lived near Raamaghattam.

Once Shri Tulasidas went for Kaamada-giri-pradakshinam. There he saw two Manohara Divya Raajakumaaras, with Dhanurbaanas, going on two Maha-ashvas. Shri Tulasidas became a mugdha on seeing Them, but didnt recognize Them. Later Shri Hanumaan told him who They were. Shri Hanumaan told to Tulasidas, when he was having pashchaattaapam, “do not worry. You will again have Shri Raama darshanam tomorrow”.

On Mouni-amaavaasya, Saumyavaasaram, in 1607 V.S., Shri Tulasidas again had the Divya Darshanam of Shri Raama and Lakshmana. Shri Raama asked “Baabaa! Please give Us this chandanam”. Shri Hanumaan took the form of a Parrot and told a doha which hinted Shri Tulasidas that it is Shri Raama who was asking him for chandanam. Shri Tulasidas lost the effect of indriyas and stood looking at Shri Raama Divya manohara ruupam. Shri Raama took the chandanam from the hands of Shri Tulasidas and put Tilakam for Himself and to Tulasidas and disappeared.

He then went to Ayodhya Kshetram and then to Prayaaga Teertham during Meghamela. He then had the Divya darshanam of Shri Bharadvaaja and Yaagnyavalka maharshis, near a Vata-Vruksham. He then went to Varaaha Kshetram and lived in a Braahmana’s house near Prahlaadaghaat in Kaashi Kshetram. There he got Kavitaa-shakti, by Shri Shaarada Kataaksham. He used to write Shlokas in Samskrutam and by the next day they used to disappear. Samething happened everyday. On the eighth day, Shri Parameshvara appeared in Tulasidas’s dream and told him “you continue your Kaavya-rachana in your Vyavahaara Bhaasha only”. Shri Tulasidas woke up and Lord Shiva, along with Shri Parvatidevi, appeared before him. Shri Tulasidas did pranaamam and Parameshvara replied

“you go to Ayodhya and do Kaavya-rachana in Avadhi bhaasha. With My aashirvaadam, your Kaavyam will be equal to Saamavedam. Many will sing your Raamaayanam and get the phalitam of singing Saamavedam”.

Shri Tulasidas started Shri Raama Charita Maanasa rachana in the Praatah-kaalam of the Shri Raama Navami in 1631 V.S. at Ayodhya Kshetram. He took 2 years, 7 months and 26 days to complete the rachana of Shri Raama Charita Maanas. Following Parameshvara aagnya he reached Kaashi and sang Shri Raama Charita Maanas before Paarvati-Parameshvara. That night Tulasidas left the Divya Grantham near Vishvanaatha mandiram and when he opened it the next day he saw “Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram” written on it. It was also signed by Parameshvara at the bottom.

Listening to this chamatkaaram, the Panditas got Iirsha on Tulasidas. They did ninda of Tulasidas. They tried to do Grantha-chauryam and appointed two chorakas for it. The chorakas near the Kutiiram of Shri Tulasidas. They saw two Ati-sundara Veeras gaurding the Kutiiram. One of Them had Shyaama-varna, the other Goura-varna shariiram. Choraka’s buddhi changed just on seeing the Veeras. They immediately left chauryam and started Shri Raama bhajana.

The Panditas, who were burning with Iirsha, asked Shri Madhusuudana Sarasvatiji to go through the Grantham. After reading the Raama Charita Maanas Shri Madhusuudanaji became very happy and praised Shri Tulasidas. This increased the Iirsha of the Panditas. They tried one more thing: they placed Veda-Shaastra-Puraana Granthas and Shri Tulasidas’s Raama Charita Maanas, as the bottom most Grantham, before Vishveshvara sannidhi. They closed doors and came next day morning. To their surprise Raama Charita Maanas was on the top of all the Granthams. They realized their mistake and fell at the feet of Shri Tulasidas.

On Aashaadha Krishna-Tadiya, Shanivaasaram, in 1680 V.S., near Aasiighaat, Shri Tulasidas reached Paramapadam.

Morals in the story:

  1. We learnt the greatness of Shri Raama charita Maanas and Shri Tulasidas. Parama Shiva Himself showed us that Shri Raama Charita Maanas is as valuable as Veda-Shaastra-Puraanas and Saamavedam.
  2. Raambola always followed all Dharmas. He did Guru-seva and learnt many Shaastras. God always likes such people. Through Ratnaavali He turned Raambola into a great Bhakta and ultimately gave him moksham.
  3. Iirsha make even great people do really bad things. The Panditas, though they learnt many times that Iirsha is an enemy, they got Iirsha and did very bad things. One must always be away from such durgunas.
